Sports Journalist Zanzeer Singh Passes Away, Leaving a Legacy of Joy and Integrity

Zanzeer Singh, a well-known sports journalist in the country, passed away at the age of 49 at the Lautoka Aspen Hospital on Tuesday after a prolonged illness.

His younger brother, Ranbeer Singh, a former journalist at Fiji TV, remembered him as someone who lived a joyful and sociable life, well-known for organizing gatherings and social events. “He had a generous and giving heart,” he stated.

Charlie Charters, a former Fiji rugby union official and sports marketing executive, praised Zanzeer for his exceptional reporting skills, describing him as a person of great humanity, integrity, and humor. “I would often direct news tips to him during his shifts because he was not only a talented wordsmith but also adept at ensuring his stories received prominence in the newspaper,” Charters remarked.

Writer Jone Kalouniviti referred to Singh as one of the standout media figures from the region, noting his thorough understanding of sports journalism and his straightforward approach. He acknowledged that while some may have misunderstood Singh’s directness, he possessed a unique sense of humor.

Indra Singh, the news director at FBC, called Zanzeer a legend among his colleagues, highlighting his distinctive methods for gathering stories and his kindness in helping others. He expressed sorrow over the loss of someone who brought joy and fun into their lives, emphasizing the lasting impact Zanzeer had on those who knew him.

Zanzeer Singh attended Namaka Public School in Nadi alongside notable classmates, including former Fiji 7s rugby coach Iliesa Tanivula and former Nadi and Pacific Islanders player Joeli Lotawa. He later attended Swami Vivekananda College.

His career began as a stringer for the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation in 1997, followed by positions at Fiji Sun in 1999 and Fiji Times in 2003, where he worked for 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Singh, and their children, Nirvana and Siddhartha Iyer. His funeral will take place on Saturday, with viewing at Lautoka’s Girmit Centre ahead of the final rites at Lovu crematorium at 1 PM.
