Crossbencher Member of Parliament Mosese Bulitavu has expressed his support for the release of George Speight, a civilian coup leader who has been granted Presidential immunity. Bulitavu is the first MP from the G9 coalition to comment on Speight’s release.
Following a review by the Mercy Commission, Speight’s application for immunity was approved on Thursday. Bulitavu stated, “He has served his time! We need to move away from our past and through reconciliation seek restoration.” He emphasized that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces is spearheading the reconciliation process, and he views Speight’s release as a significant step forward.
Bulitavu noted the rarity of politicians who have experienced incarceration and can appreciate the importance of giving a fully rehabilitated individual a second chance. He urged society to reconsider its perceptions of former prisoners, advocating for a more inclusive approach after they have completed their rehabilitation.
