Spate of Weekend Accidents Sends Shockwaves: What Happened?

Several serious accidents recorded over the weekend have been attributed to driver fatigue and fault of pedestrians.

On Saturday night in Waidalice in Korovou, a vehicle driven by a man carrying four others veered off the Wailau Bridge due to driver fatigue. The incident occurred before 9 pm and it is alleged that the driver fell asleep, leading to the accident. Three of the victims were transferred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital where they remained admitted, while the driver and the fourth passenger were treated and discharged.

In a separate incident along Ratu Mara Road, a 27-year-old man was admitted to CWM Hospital after being struck by a vehicle driven by a 41-year-old man. It is alleged that the victim suddenly crossed the road, resulting in the accident.

Another accident recorded on Sunday involved a vehicle driven by a 26-year-old man near Nasole, which veered onto the opposite lane and collided with a vehicle driven by a 53-year-old woman. The victim was taken to the Valelevu Health Centre and later transferred to CWM Hospital.

In the Southern Division, another accident occurred when a vehicle driven by a 47-year-old man allegedly veered onto the opposite lane near Tamavua Village and collided with a bus. The impact led to the involvement of a third vehicle driven by a 37-year-old man. The 47-year-old suspect is currently admitted at CWM Hospital.

This morning, Nausori Police attended to a serious accident near Dilkusha Road. The driver sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Nausori Health Centre for treatment.

Drivers and pedestrians are reminded to stay alert and take their roles and responsibilities regarding road safety seriously, as complacency can lead to accidents.
