Spate of Fires Across Fiji: What’s Fueling the Flames?

Investigations are nearing completion regarding five recent fires, including one that damaged a vacant house at Eco Trax.

Puamau Sowane, Chief Executive Officer of Fiji’s National Fire Authority, has issued a statement on the recent residential fires, highlighting the critical need for fire safety.

Several fires were reported across various locations in Fiji between July 9 and 10.

On July 9, a fire occurred around mid-morning at Gaji Road in Samabula, Suva, affecting a household of six adults and two children. Specific details on the damage and cause are still being finalized.

Later that evening, a fire in Burenitu Village, Nalawa, Ra, significantly damaged a residence, impacting four individuals, with estimated damage costs totaling $25,000.

The following day, fires in Burelevu Village, Saivou, Ra, and at Uciwai Sangam School in Nadi resulted in complete destruction. The respective damage costs were $30,000 and $50,000, affecting five and six people respectively.

Mr. Sowane urged homeowners to secure their properties, pointing to causes such as candles and electrical faults.

“Over the years, the electrical wire insulation capability could have lowered due to aging factors. Electrical wire insulation deteriorates over time. Most electrical wire insulation design life expectancy is between 20 to 30 years.”

He advised regular electrical inspections and prompt reporting of emergencies to NFA’s toll-free line at 910.
