The 2024 Fiji Spartan APAC Championship and Trifecta successfully concluded yesterday, featuring both a 10km super and a 5km sprint obstacle race at Aviva Farms in Sabeto. The picturesque venue, surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Garden of Sleeping Giant and its lush forests, played host to numerous participants, including experienced Spartan racers from around the globe, local teams, and newcomers to the sport.
David Dewar, who tackled the Spartan Super 10km, praised the event, stating, “It was an excellent event. The 10km was pretty gruelling, but it was great to have the support of so many people along the course. Well done to the organizers, Tourism Fiji, and sponsors for putting on an epic event in such a stunning location.”
First-time participant Susannah Hodson expressed her enthusiasm after completing the 5km Sprint with her friends. “This was my first Spartan race, and it was a great chance to get the whole family involved. The kids loved the kid’s race, and I found the 5km tough, but it gives you a great sense of achievement at the end,” she said.
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, the event was tinged with challenges as Fiji’s champion boxer and ambassador, Winston Hill, faced setbacks due to a hand injury he sustained during his last bout in Nadi. Hill, although still recovering, was determined to participate. “I had broken my hand in the last fight, so this set me back from competing in the races I wanted to do,” he noted. Despite his injury, he managed to join in the competitions, navigating obstacles where possible, highlighting the spirit of resilience and determination.
Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, shared his excitement about the event, noting, “The Spartan Fiji Trifecta kicked off with the 10k night race, and we are super excited for what’s in store over the weekend.” He pointed out that last year’s event brought considerable economic benefits, contributing over FJD$7.8 million to Fiji’s economy. He expressed confidence that this year would bring equal or greater impact while promoting physical fitness and showcasing the beauty of Fiji to an international audience.
This year’s event not only celebrated sportsmanship but also highlighted the strong community spirit and the potential for positive economic growth through such lively international competitions.
In summary, the Fiji Spartan APAC Championship and Trifecta served as a remarkable event, uniting athletes from around the world while promoting physical fitness and economic growth in the region. The scenic backdrop of the event added to the overall experience, leaving participants with a renewed sense of accomplishment and community engagement.
