The 2024 Fiji Spartan APAC Championship and Trifecta wrapped up on a high note with exciting 10km super and 5km sprint obstacle races taking place at Aviva Farms in Sabeto. The picturesque setting of the Garden of the Sleeping Giant provided a breathtaking backdrop for the event, which attracted hundreds of participants including experienced Spartan racers from across the globe, first-time competitors, and local teams.

David Dewar, who completed the challenging Spartan Super 10km, praised the event, highlighting the invaluable support from spectators throughout the course. “It was an excellent event… the 10km was pretty gruelling, but it was great to have the support of so many people. Well done to the organizers and sponsors for putting on an epic event in such a stunning location,” he expressed.

First-time participant Susannah Hodson also shared her experience after completing the 5km Sprint with friends. “This was my first Spartan race and a great chance to involve the whole family. The kids loved the kid’s race, and I found the 5km tough, but it gives you a wonderful sense of achievement afterwards,” she noted.

Despite the festive atmosphere, Fiji’s champion boxer and ambassador, Winston Hill, faced personal challenges as he continued his recovery from a hand injury. He had broken his hand in a recent fight in Nadi, impacting his ability to fully compete in the races. “I still competed in the open division in the 10km and 5km, although there were some obstacles I couldn’t attempt due to my broken hand. I focused on bypassing and running and had fun,” he stated.

Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, expressed enthusiasm about the turnout, noting that the Spartan Fiji Trifecta began with a night race and attracted athletes and families from all over the globe. He highlighted the positive economic impact of the event, which contributed over FJD$7.8 million to Fiji’s economy last year, and remains optimistic that this year will yield similar or even greater benefits while promoting physical fitness and showcasing the natural beauty of Fiji.

Overall, the event was not only a thrilling experience for participants but also a reminder of the power of community support, fitness, and the allure of Fiji as a destination for sporting events.

This year’s Spartan Championship not only brought competitors together for a challenging test of endurance but also highlighted the spirit of resilience and community involvement, underpinning a hopeful future for sports tourism in Fiji.
