Social Media Strife: Are Women Fighting Each Other’s Battles?

The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre has raised concerns about the rising hostility among women on social media. Lavenia Tuitabu, a counsellor advocate at FWCC, posed a crucial question during a live session on the organization’s social media channel: Who is to blame for the animosity that ensues between women?

According to Tuitabu, conflicts often arise when a woman discovers that her partner is involved with someone else. This leads to confrontations between the two women, resulting in displays of animosity online.

Tuitabu highlighted that women, despite their pain, tend to defend their partners while attacking the other woman involved. “During these conflicts, women often overlook their male partners and clash with each other, resorting to hurtful language,” she noted.

Moreover, she pointed out that the man at the center of this turmoil typically remains unaffected and indifferent to the emotional distress experienced by both women. Tuitabu emphasized that the responsibility lies with the man, who manipulates both parties. “It’s distressing to acknowledge. Ultimately, we witness these women being ridiculed online, with unkind comments directed at them,” she added.
