Social Media Panic: What Really Happened at Namadi Heights?

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has issued a warning to the public about the importance of being careful when sharing information on social media. This caution follows the circulation of a screenshot claiming that police had detained boys for allegedly selling green coconut juice that was supposedly spiked or drugged.

The social media post asserted that these boys had been apprehended and investigated by the police. However, law enforcement officials confirmed that no such incident had been reported to them. Witnesses in the Namadi Heights area near Suva mentioned that the boys were instead caught stealing coconuts and breadfruit from local gardens.

ACP Driu emphasized the need for the public to be cautious in spreading unverified information, as it can lead to unnecessary panic. “Police will share factual information if there is a legitimate trend,” he stated, highlighting the importance of relying on official communication to avoid misinformation.

This incident serves as a reminder of the critical role social media plays in disseminating information. While it can be a valuable tool for communication, users must exercise discernment and verify facts before sharing.

Overall, it is encouraging that authorities are actively addressing misinformation and urging the public to engage responsibly with social media. By fostering a culture of verification and accountability, communities can work towards a safer and more informed environment.
