The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging social media influencers and all road users to stop dangerous driving behaviors, such as using mobile devices to record while driving. LTA Acting Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa expressed concern over the rise in videos showing reckless driving being posted on social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok. He stated that these actions not only violate the law but also pose serious risks to road safety.

“In recent months, we have noticed a troubling increase in videos from social media influencers that showcase dangerous driving, including filming while behind the wheel,” Rokosawa said. “These videos, which often receive thousands of views, send a harmful message that such actions are acceptable, which is not the case. Engaging in these activities is illegal and irresponsible.”

He emphasized that sharing videos of reckless driving is dangerous and sets a poor example for others who may think such behavior is permissible. “We want to make it very clear that driving while distracted by mobile phones or other gadgets is illegal and highly dangerous,” he added. “We urge influencers and all drivers to halt these behaviors immediately and prioritize safety on our roads.”

The LTA is actively monitoring social media to identify and respond to these hazardous actions. Rokosawa highlighted the severe consequences of distractions while driving, which not only increase accident risks but also jeopardize the safety of all road users. He noted that speeding, dangerous driving, driving under the influence, fatigue, and other distractions are significant factors leading to fatal accidents.

In response to recent incidents and the growing prevalence of dangerous driving behaviors, the Authority will step up enforcement efforts during this busy travel season. Enforcement personnel will be deployed to monitor high-traffic areas, particularly near popular transport hubs and known accident hotspots.

Rokosawa assured that speed limits and traffic laws would be strictly enforced, with particular attention to reckless and impaired driving. “Our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of all road users. By intensifying enforcement, we aim to create a safer driving environment and reduce the number of road accidents,” he stated.

The public is encouraged to report any reckless driving or unsafe behaviors through the LTA’s complaints channel by texting 582 or emailing help@lta.com.fj/complaints@lta.com.fj.
