The fear of social media attacks remains a significant obstacle for women in leadership roles, according to Sashi Kiran, the Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection. Speaking at a panel discussion hosted by Dialogue Fiji in Suva this week, Kiran highlighted that a lack of mentorship is another major concern.

“People express their fears regarding social media and online bullying,” Kiran noted. “Women have mentioned anxieties such as, ‘If I appear in a photo in a public setting, could that be weaponized against me, affecting my family and community?’”

She pointed out that even women in strong managerial positions often feel underprepared. “Many do not feel adequately trained to assume their roles,” Kiran explained. “There is a perception that they lack the necessary emotional and mental support.”

Kiran further mentioned that when women are poised to step into leadership roles, they often experience increased self-doubt. This sentiment was reflected in discussions from a management group focused on human resources.
