Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu has issued a public reminder to exercise caution when sharing information on social media. This advisory follows a viral screenshot that inaccurately claimed police had detained boys for selling green coconut juice that was supposedly laced with drugs.
Authorities clarified that no such incident had been reported to them. The misleading photo circulating online depicted a police officer detaining boys at Namadi Heights near Suva. Eyewitnesses, however, reported that the actual situation involved the boys being caught in the act of stealing coconuts and breadfruits from nearby properties.
“Police will disseminate accurate information if there is indeed a trend occurring, and we urge the public to refrain from sharing unverified claims that may incite unnecessary panic,” said ACP Driu.
This scenario highlights the responsibility of individuals and communities in verifying information before passing it on. Social media can be a powerful tool for communication, but it also has the potential to escalate rumors and misinformation.
In a positive light, this incident serves as a reminder for everyone to utilize critical thinking and to support each other in building a more informed community. By remaining vigilant and fact-checking, we can foster a more accurate flow of information that protects the well-being of all.
