SMEs: The Backbone of Fiji’s Economic Future

The success of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is essential for the overall prosperity of the economy, as highlighted by Fiji Development Bank (FDB) board chairman Damend Gounder at the 2023 FDB National Small and Medium Enterprise Awards held in Suva. He described the event as a celebration of recognition, appreciation, and a revival of collective commitment to entrepreneurial spirit.

Gounder emphasized the significant role SMEs play in both the economic and social spheres of the country, reiterating FDB’s dedication to supporting these enterprises. He noted that SMEs are undergoing an evolution amid technological advancements and increasing challenges, yet they continue to progress and develop inclusively, utilizing greener technologies and infrastructures.

He also expressed confidence in the future, stating that the next generations will benefit from the numerous interconnected enterprises that safeguard economic and cultural interests while acknowledging that everyone has an important role to fulfill.

President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere remarked that FDB has been a crucial supporter of SMEs, having allocated $40 million to the sector in the previous year, underscoring the institution’s commitment to national development.
