Skill Upgrades Boost for Suva City Council Employees

The Suva City Council (SCC) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pacific Polytech (PP), enabling skilled-based employees to pursue and achieve further qualifications through skill-based certificates. Acting CEO Tevita Boseiwaqa emphasized that this initiative will enhance the qualifications of staff, affecting over 200 individuals involved in skill-based work.

Boseiwaqa pointed out that the MoU will benefit a significant portion of their workforce, as their approach focuses on multi-level skills development. He mentioned that SCC will carry out a training needs analysis to pinpoint specific areas where staff can benefit from the agreement. This analysis aims to identify skill gaps, helping employees gain a variety of competencies rather than being limited to one specialty.

Peni Taoi, founding director of PP, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting that this MoU adds to similar agreements signed with Labasa and Nasinu Town Councils, all aimed at improving employee skills. Taoi highlighted PP’s focus on technical skills and upskilling to leverage new opportunities. This MoU represents the third such collaboration with the council, following previous agreements in Labasa and Nasinu.
