Six Provinces Eliminated as Vanua Championship Heads to Elimination Round Two for Skipper Cup Qualification

Beautiful cricket field surrounded by palm trees and lush mountains in Fiji.

Six teams have been eliminated from contention in the Vodafone Vanua Championship after a bruising opening round, further sharpening the fight for places in the Skipper Cup. Coastland, Namosi, Northern Bulls, Ra, Serua and Yasawa bowed out following a fiercely contested opening day in the Viti Levu competition, organisers confirmed, leaving the remaining sides to battle on in elimination fixtures this weekend.

The next slate of Viti Levu matches — Elimination Round Two — is scheduled for this Saturday with three fixtures all kicking off at 3pm. Northland will meet Nasinu at Dawasamu School Grounds, Tavua travel to Garvey Park to take on Ovalau, and Natukoula face Rewa at Theodore Park. Winners from these knockout encounters will keep their Skipper Cup ambitions alive as the competition progresses toward its later qualifying stages.

At the same time, Vanua Levu sides begin their campaign this weekend, opening their portion of the draw with two Round One fixtures also set for a 3pm start on Saturday. Bua will host Macuata at Bua College, while Cakaudrove take on Taveuni at Ratu Ganilau Park. Those ties mark the start of the northern island’s fight for progression in the Vanua Championship and a possible route into the national competition.

Tournament organisers described the opening round as closely fought, with several matches coming down to fine margins and resulting in the early elimination of the six provinces named. The Vanua Championship functions as the feeder competition for the Skipper Cup, making each knockout game pivotal for teams aiming to advance to the national stage.

With elimination matches concentrated into a single afternoon, provincial coaches and local supporters will be watching for decisive displays in set-piece performance and discipline, elements that have often decided close Vanua Championship ties. The weekend’s results will quickly reshape the competition landscape and set the remaining fixtures as teams pursue the limited qualification slots on offer.

Further updates on match outcomes and progress through the Vanua Championship will follow as results come in from Dawasamu School Grounds, Garvey Park, Theodore Park, Bua College and Ratu Ganilau Park.
