During a recent reflection on the Coalition Government’s political journey over the past two years, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka discussed the challenges he faced leading up to the 2022 General Election, where he was labeled a snake and faced various accusations, including the use of racial tactics.
Mr. Rabuka noted the personal attacks he encountered, stating, “I was demonised, accused of many things.” He expressed that while such insults do not affect him personally—having previously faced similar criticism during his first term as Prime Minister from 1992 to 1999—he recognized the impact they had on the electorate, particularly instilling fear among the Indo-Fijian community.
Highlighting his identity, Mr. Rabuka mentioned, “Perhaps I should introduce myself again—I am Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, whose favourite dish is dhal and rice,” indicating his deep roots in the community. He also emphasized the trust established between him and Professor Biman Prasad, stating that Mr. Prasad would not have entered into a post-election coalition agreement if trust did not exist.
“I want to, once and for all, put an end to fear and doubts about my sincerity as a national leader, particularly to the Indo-Fijian community,” Mr. Rabuka declared. He assured the public of their joint effort in rebuilding Fiji’s future as a united three-party coalition government, predicting a transformed electoral landscape by the time they approach the next election.
