Two sisters, Adi Nunia Talatok and Makelesi Tikomainavualiku Kautoga, achieved a significant milestone on Wednesday by receiving their Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Medicine from the Fiji National University. Their graduation ceremony, held at the Fiji Vodafone Arena, was a proud moment not just for the sisters but for their entire family.
The sisters attributed their success to the sacrifices made by their parents and the guidance they received from God. Adi Nunia, the elder sister, completed her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) in China, while Makelesi finished her MBBS at FNU in 2015. Reflecting on their journey, Makelesi stated, “It hasn’t been easy juggling work and studies, but we’re thankful to God for being the source of wisdom and knowledge throughout this journey.” This accomplishment marks them as the first members of their extended family to obtain such qualifications.
Makelesi expressed her hope that their achievement would inspire others to pursue new fields of study. Both sisters are currently practicing at Aspen Medical in Lautoka, motivated by a strong dedication to patient care. As Makelesi emphasized, “You have to be knowledgeable and compassionate to provide quality care daily.”
For Adi Nunia, her son serves as her greatest source of inspiration. She shared, “I’ve seen the struggles my parents endured for me and my four siblings. I want to be a similar inspiration to others, especially my son. He’s my reason to push myself to the next level and set a benchmark for him to strive ahead.”
The sisters also expressed gratitude for the support of senior healthcare professionals and highlighted the power of perseverance. “While the course was challenging and time-consuming, anything is possible if you put your mind to it—especially when God is at the center of it all,” they affirmed.
This story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of dedication, family support, and faith. With their determination and commitment to helping others, Adi Nunia and Makelesi are paving the way for future generations in their family and community.
In summary, the sisters’ journey showcases the importance of resilience and the influence of role models, and it offers a hopeful outlook for others aspiring to follow in their footsteps. Their accomplishments not only elevate their family legacy but also contribute positively to the healthcare field in Fiji.
