Sinking Concerns: Light Oil Leak Contained in Suva Harbour

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is actively managing a situation involving the MV Sullivan, which has sunk in Suva Harbour. According to CEO Joeli Cawaki, the leak from the vessel consists primarily of light oil and fuel, and efforts are currently underway to prevent further spread. Cawaki mentioned that while the light oil tends to dissipate on the water’s surface, MSAF is equipped with a response team specialized in sea cleaning and absorption for any heavier oils that may surface.

As part of their comprehensive response, water samples from the surrounding area have been sent to the Water Authority of Fiji to conduct tests, ensuring that environmental safety is a priority. MSAF has been in communication with local mariners to keep them informed of the ongoing operations. In addition, the Water Police will be conducting security checks in the vicinity.

Cawaki reassured local communities, including the residents of Navukavu and nearby villages, that there is no cause for alarm and that the situation is under control. He emphasized their commitment to removing all oil from the sunken vessel and will provide updates following a team meeting scheduled for the morning.

This proactive approach by the MSAF highlights the importance of swift action and community communication in environmental management. It remains crucial for authorities to maintain vigilance and take appropriate measures to protect marine and coastal ecosystems.

In summary, the coordinated response to the oil leak from the MV Sullivan reflects an effective emergency management strategy aimed at ensuring environmental safety and community reassurance.
