Single mother Salote Maria Taukeisalili has achieved a remarkable feat by earning her degree despite facing significant challenges. The 24-year-old mother of two from Nakorovou Village, Kubulau in Bua, received unwavering support from her family, friends, and loved ones throughout her tertiary education.

Ms. Taukeisalili, who grew up in her mother’s village of Namuamua in the highlands of Namosi, is the eldest among four siblings. She completed her primary education at Ro Matanitobua Memorial School and went on to earn her secondary education at Vashist Muni College and Nasinu Secondary School.

She began her studies at the University of the South Pacific (USP) in Lautoka, initially majoring in commerce before shifting her focus to a Bachelor of Arts Graduate Certificate in Education, with specializations in Geography and English.

Her journey into academia started in 2019, coinciding with her pregnancy with her first child, which she described as both “challenging but rewarding.” Ms. Taukeisalili continued her education despite experiencing morning sickness and physical exhaustion during her pregnancy.

In 2022, she welcomed her second son, Ezekiel. While she informed her children’s father about the new addition, she felt let down by his lack of involvement and decided to raise her children with the support of her family. “You can’t force anyone to help if they are not willing to,” she noted.

Despite facing many obstacles, Ms. Taukeisalili kept her goals firmly in mind, especially after the birth of her first son, Romeo. She expressed that her son brought new purpose to her life and motivated her to pursue her dreams.

With her family’s support, particularly from her mother who took on babysitting responsibilities at their home in Namosi, Ms. Taukeisalili was able to continue her studies while residing with relatives in Navua to reduce the stress of commuting to classes.

She initially struggled with leaving her young son but found strength in her family’s encouragement. Ms. Taukeisalili expressed deep gratitude to her family for believing in her and enabling her to pursue her education.

In addition to her academic success, she has also been involved in the fashion industry, participating in Fiji Fashion Week multiple times, showcasing her passion for fashion and her vibrant personality.

In late April this year, Ms. Taukeisalili celebrated a joyful milestone, holding her children while receiving her certificate at the Vodafone Arena. Shortly thereafter, she secured a teaching position at Dilkusha Methodist High School in Nausori.

“God did it, it was all God, and all the glory goes back to him. I thank him for the struggles and the challenges; they made me more resilient. The late-night studies and sacrifices were indeed rewarding. Looking back, I am confident to say I wouldn’t have it any other way,” she reflected.
