Single mother Salote Maria Taukeisalili has overcome significant challenges to earn her degree. At 24, this dedicated mother of two from Nakorovou Village in Bua has demonstrated remarkable determination during her tertiary education, with the unwavering support of her family and friends.
Raised in Namuamua in the Namosi highlands as the eldest of four siblings, Ms. Taukeisalili attended Ro Matanitobua Memorial School for her primary education, followed by Vashist Muni College and Nasinu Secondary School for her secondary education.
She initially enrolled at the University of the South Pacific in Lautoka, focusing on commerce. However, she ultimately pursued a Bachelor of Arts Graduate Certificate in Education, specializing in Geography and English.
Ms. Taukeisalili began her career journey in 2019, shortly after discovering she was pregnant with her first child. She described this period as both “challenging but rewarding.” Despite struggling with morning sickness and physical discomfort, she continued her studies. Her second son, Ezekiel, was born in 2022.
Although she informed her children’s father about her situation, he offered no assistance, leading her to raise her children with the strong support of her family. Ms. Taukeisalili expressed that one cannot force someone to help if they are unwilling.
Despite the obstacles, she remained focused on her goals, which were fueled by her desire to take care of her son, Romeo. “After giving birth to my eldest, everything I contemplated was overshadowed by this little beam of light who’d made me a mother,” she reflected.
With her immediate family’s unwavering support—her mother taking on babysitting duties while she studied in Navua—Ms. Taukeisalili persevered through her education. Initially, it was difficult to leave her young son, but encouragement from her family helped her through.
“I’m deeply grateful to my number one supporters, my parents, for believing in me, trusting me, and allowing me to complete my education,” she said.
Additionally, Ms. Taukeisalili has participated in Fiji Fashion Week multiple times, showcasing her love for fashion. In April, she joyfully received her certificate at the Vodafone Arena, with her children by her side. Just two weeks later, she began teaching at Dilkusha Methodist High School in Nausori.
“God did it; all the glory goes back to Him. I thank Him for the struggles and challenges; they made me more resilient. The late nights and sacrifices were rewarding,” she stated. Reflecting on her journey, she confidently concluded that she wouldn’t have it any other way.
