Nineteen-year-old Sikeli Suliasi from Tabalei, Magodro, is making a significant impact at the Fiji Sports Council U20 7s tournament, taking place at Lawaqa Park. Despite being deaf and mute, Suliasi shines as a key player for the Uluimagodro 7s team, showcasing remarkable skill and determination that have garnered the admiration of teammates and coaches, positioning him as a rising star in Fijian rugby.

Head coach Samuela Navale regards Suliasi as one of the team’s standout players. “He’s a very skilled player. He listens and follows instructions perfectly,” Navale stated. The team’s ability to execute drills, game strategies, and plans with consistent precision is a testament to Suliasi’s talent, which is further highlighted by Navale’s remark, “It amazes us how he gives his best every time he’s on the field.”

Suliasi’s contributions have elevated him to the role of a crucial asset for the team. “He’s our key player. He plays with so much passion, and we just love having him on our side,” Navale emphasized.

Due to the long distance from their village, the team stays with their coach in Lautoka for ongoing training. “Training together in the village would be difficult, so I’ve brought them down to Lautoka to stay with me,” Navale explained. In their opening match, the Uluimagodro 7s secured a victory against the Lami Cavaliers with a score of 26-12, showcasing Suliasi’s pivotal role in the win.

This story serves as an inspiring reminder of how determination and teamwork can transcend challenges, illustrating the extraordinary capabilities of individuals like Suliasi who share a passion for sports regardless of their circumstances. His journey not only encourages inclusiveness in sports but also highlights the potential for individuals to achieve greatness when support and opportunity align.

Overall, Suliasi’s journey in rugby shows a promising future not only for himself but also for the representation of athletes with disabilities in sports, fostering a spirit of unity and strength in competition.
