“Shop Smart This Diwali: Protect Your Wallet and Consumer Rights!”

As Diwali approaches, consumers are advised to make careful purchasing choices and remain informed about their rights. While the festival of lights brings joy and a spirit of generosity, it is vital for consumers to safeguard their hard-earned money and ensure their expenditures are wise and meaningful.

Last year, the Consumer Council of Fiji recorded 163 complaints totaling over $15,000 during the Diwali season, shedding light on various consumer issues. Complaints included a lack of displayed prices, inconsistencies between advertised prices and what was charged at the checkout, and sales of expired food items. Additionally, consumers reported finding contaminated food products, some infested with weevils.

The Council noted that one of the most common concerns during this time is price gouging, where essential items experience unjustified price hikes due to high demand. A recent incident highlighted this issue when ghee prices rose significantly. Overcharging on regulated staple food items has also been a frequent complaint.

Moreover, customers should be mindful of typical issues related to hair and beauty treatments, including subpar services. Online shopping has introduced its own set of challenges, with numerous consumers reporting non-delivery of clothing and other items after payment was completed.

“Diwali is a time for celebration, but it is important for consumers to stay vigilant in their shopping practices. We encourage everyone to be cautious, avoid hasty purchases, and carefully inspect their items before finalizing a transaction,” stated Council CEO Seema Shandil.

“Retaining receipts is essential, as it aids in seeking remedies if any problems arise post-purchase.”

Being aware of potential problems—such as discrepancies at checkout, overcharging on regulated goods, and the pitfalls of online shopping—will enhance the festive experience while minimizing stress. Shandil also emphasized that the risks extend to online retail, where scams may increase during the festive season, urging consumers to verify the reliability of websites and the genuineness of products before making online purchases.
