Health officials have raised alarms over a troubling surge in HIV/AIDS cases in Lautoka. Dr. Arvin Chaudhry, the head of the Family Health Clinic Western, referred to the increase as “shocking,” especially for a city of Lautoka’s stature. Since his arrival from England, he has diagnosed seven new cases, bringing the total number of individuals living with HIV/AIDS in the area to 22.
Dr. Chaudhry noted that the actual prevalence could be significantly higher, potentially multiplying the known cases by five to ten, as many patients were uncertain about how they contracted the virus. The diagnoses are particularly concerning, as all the individuals are aged between 20 and 35 years old.
In a related concern, campaigner Tuberi Cati, who is living with AIDS, emphasized the need for engaging activities for the youth in Bua to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. Following her recent awareness campaign in the region, she observed that many young people were primarily involved in drinking yaqona and sexual activity.
Bua parliamentarian Josetaki Vula echoed these sentiments, urging the Ministry of Health to enhance awareness efforts and directly engage with the community, particularly targeting the youth population.
