“Shocking Surge: Fiji’s HIV Crisis Demands Urgent Action!”

Opposition MP Jone Usamate has described the recent increase in HIV cases in Fiji as “shocking” and a necessary wake-up call that demands immediate action.

Data from the Health Ministry indicates that this year has seen an alarming rise of 522 new HIV cases, representing a 33 percent increase compared to 2023. Among these, 85 cases were linked to the use of injectable drugs.

Usamate expressed concern that the sharing of needles among drug users significantly contributes to the spread of HIV, particularly affecting the youth. He emphasized the need for proactive engagement with young people, encouraging their involvement in constructive activities to steer them away from hard drugs and risky sexual behaviors that could lead to HIV transmission.

He pointed out recent findings indicating that youth are transitioning from mild substances like suki to marijuana, and eventually to more dangerous drugs.

Usamate suggested that some countries have adopted Syringe Services programs, which provide clean needles and safe disposal options. However, he cautioned that such measures could be perceived as endorsing drug use.

He urged a shift towards proactive strategies involving not only the government but also communities, religious organizations, families, and educational institutions. He called for the establishment of taskforces that include various ministries, civil society organizations, and faith-based groups to collaboratively tackle this pressing issue.

Usamate also highlighted the importance of increasing investment in awareness campaigns through mainstream and social media to educate families and encourage discussions about these challenges at home.

He concluded by advocating for a collective national effort to combat this critical health crisis.
