Opposition Member of Parliament Joseph Nand has expressed serious concerns regarding the findings of an investigation into the death of a Japanese tourist at a resort in Sigatoka, calling them “shocking and unacceptable.” The 50-year-old tourist faced challenges while snorkeling off the resort earlier this month, prompting a review of the safety protocols in place.
Nand described the situation as scandalous, highlighting a troubling lack of welfare and duty of care exhibited by the resort. He pointed out that the public generally trusts that resorts comply with safety standards. However, recent findings from the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) review raise alarming questions about the capacity of other resorts to assure the safety and well-being of their guests.
He emphasized the need for immediate strategic actions to address these issues, while also criticizing the authorities responsible for monitoring OHS compliance for what he views as a significant failure. Nand raised urgent questions about the frequency and thoroughness of inspections and what measures are in place to deal with non-compliant facilities.
While he acknowledged Minister Singh’s prompt initiation of an investigation, Nand’s primary concern lies in the implementation of effective measures to prevent future incidents.
This tragic event serves as a critical reminder of the importance of rigorous safety standards in the hospitality industry. It is essential for authorities and resort operators to collaborate closely to enhance safety protocols and ensure that all guests can enjoy their holidays without risk. Additionally, such incidents can fuel discussions that lead to meaningful improvements in safety regulations, ultimately protecting future visitors and enhancing the reputation of the region’s tourism industry.
