The alarming discovery that nearly 100 students in the Nadi area have been engaging in sexual activities on the dark web has raised serious concerns. Alice Fong, Divisional Counsellor for the Ministry of Education in the West, made this revelation during an event at the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji Women’s Conference in Lautoka on Saturday.
Ms. Fong addressed the issue of a social media application reportedly being used by boys and girls to share explicit photos and videos. She highlighted alarming statements made by these minors, such as, “buy me a $100 recharge card, buy my phone, I need a hotel room.”
Among the troubling cases, Ms. Fong mentioned encountering a primary school student who was soliciting such activities. She pointed out that law enforcement had identified 100 active students involved in these activities exclusively in the Nadi District.
“There is a misconception that this issue is limited to Nadi or Lautoka. The reality is that it is happening now, and I speak from what I have witnessed and learned,” she stated. Ms. Fong urged parents to closely monitor their children’s activities online.
This disturbing situation poses significant questions: What influences have led our children to such bold actions? Is this a reflection of a fragmented society?
The challenge ahead lies in how to restore confidence in young people while instilling crucial values. The digital age has undoubtedly influenced their behavior and perceptions, raising concerns about the parental role in guiding youth.
Factors such as time, peer pressure, and socioeconomic conditions – including poverty and family neglect – must also be considered in understanding this troubling trend.
For meaningful change to occur, decisive actions must be taken at home, including a shift in priorities. It is disheartening to confront such realities; however, it is imperative for all stakeholders to safeguard the youth against all forms of abuse, encouraging them to make positive choices and realize their potential.
Engagement, understanding, and providing love and time to our children are vital steps toward addressing these issues effectively.
