The Ministry of Health is preparing for a rise in new HIV cases as it enhances its testing initiatives. So far this year, the ministry has reported 552 new cases from January to June, a 33 percent increase compared to the total for 2023. Dr. Rachel Devi, head of Family Health, acknowledged the potential strain this could impose on the sector’s resources if they are not adequately prepared.

In another important topic, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives and Small Medium Enterprises, Manoa Kamikamica, emphasized the need for a thorough analysis of the Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations (PACER) Plus. He indicated that changes in the domestic and international economic landscapes necessitate reevaluating Fiji’s position on the agreement to ensure it aligns with national development goals and addresses the structural changes needed for the vulnerable local economy.

Additionally, concerning information has emerged regarding nearly 100 school students in Nadi reportedly engaging in sex work via the dark web. Alice Fong, Divisional Counsellor West for the Ministry of Education, disclosed this alarming trend during a women’s conference in Lautoka. She mentioned that students were using a social media app to share explicit content and solicit money for various needs.

The issue raises serious questions about societal influences on youth behavior. Fong urged parents to monitor their children’s activities closely. This situation highlights a broader concern about the challenges facing the youth today, including peer pressure, family dynamics, neglect, and the impact of the digital age.

Addressing these issues requires significant changes at home, prioritizing engagement and support for children. Stakeholders must work together to shield the youth from various forms of harm and guide them toward positive choices and aspirations. Ultimately, fostering understanding and giving them love, care, and time is fundamental to effecting lasting improvements.
