Opposition MP Premila Kumar has expressed her shock over the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the new Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), particularly given the fact that FICAC is currently investigating Malimali for alleged abuse of office.
Kumar described the decision as “astonishing and unethical,” questioning the Judicial Services Commission’s (JSC) actions in confirming the appointment of someone who is under investigation by the organization she is set to lead.
She raised critical questions about whether the JSC was aware of these investigations or chose to overlook them. Kumar emphasized that this decision undermines the integrity and credibility of the appointment process.
Furthermore, she expressed concern that public trust in FICAC’s impartiality could be compromised if its leader is involved in serious allegations. Kumar stated that the public deserves transparency and accountability from those in powerful positions.
She has called for the Chair of the Judicial Services Commission to provide a comprehensive explanation of how this decision was reached and why proper diligence appears to have been lacking in such an important appointment. Kumar concluded that the people of Fiji deserve better governance and that those in leadership positions must prioritize the nation’s best interests, ensuring that institutions are managed by individuals of unwavering integrity.
