Shock and Controversy: Fiji’s Corruption Commission Head Under Investigation

Opposition MP Premila Kumar expressed her shock over the appointment of Electoral Commission Chairperson Barbara Malimali to the new Commission of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). In a statement, Kumar described the move as both astonishing and unethical, highlighting that Malimali is currently under investigation by the very organization she is about to lead.

Kumar raised concerns regarding the Judicial Services Commission’s (JSC) knowledge of these investigations, questioning whether they were unaware or chose to overlook them. She emphasized that this decision calls into question the integrity and credibility of the appointment process.

“How can the public have confidence in FICAC’s ability to carry out its mandate impartially when its leadership is facing serious allegations?” Kumar asked, insisting that the public deserves transparency and accountability from those in power.

The Opposition MP has called for the Chair of the JSC to provide a detailed explanation of the decision-making process regarding this appointment and to clarify why proper due diligence was seemingly not conducted.

Kumar underscored the need for better leadership in Fiji, arguing it is crucial that authority figures act in the nation’s best interest and ensure that institutions are led by individuals of impeccable integrity. FijiLive has also sought a response from Justice Salesi Temo, Chairperson of the Judicial Services Commission.
