The Solar Lights Initiative was officially launched yesterday, with the goal of enhancing the safety of homes in informal settlements. As part of this initiative, 10 solar lights were distributed to thirty-five families in the Moala Settlement located in Nasinu.
Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, emphasized that this initiative goes beyond merely illuminating streets and pathways; it is primarily focused on increasing the safety of community residents, especially women and children. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the Moala Settlement, which include issues related to drug trafficking, violence, and crime—problems that disproportionately affect vulnerable groups, namely women and children.
Last year, the Ministry collaborated with the Nasinu Town Council to install solar lights in Kalabu Village, a long-standing request from the community. The successful launch of this initiative was made possible through a partnership among the Ministry of Local Government, the Nasinu Town Council, and sponsors of the Vodafone Nasinu Festival, which raised around $70,000, with $45,000 allocated for solar light installations in targeted areas.
The first phase of the initiative saw the deployment of 10 solar lights in Moala Settlement, another 10 in Batiniwai Settlement in Caubati, and 5 in Nasole Hart. Minister Nalumisa expressed gratitude to the Nasinu Town Council and its Special Administrators for their efforts in realizing this vision.
This initiative not only provides tangible benefits in terms of safety and security but also fosters a sense of community and collaboration among the residents and local government. It reflects a promising step forward in addressing safety concerns in underprivileged areas.
In summary, the Solar Lights Initiative represents a significant effort to improve community safety in informal settlements, illustrating how local collaboration can lead to meaningful change.
