Shifting the Narrative: Fiji’s Call to Confront Suicide Rates

The Ministry of Health in Fiji has reported a total of 1,276 suicide and attempted suicide cases from 2016 to 2021, averaging 213 cases annually, with around half resulting in death. The peak of these incidents occurred in 2019, with 244 recorded cases, and the Western Division consistently reported the highest numbers each year over the six-year period.

Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister responsible for Health and Medical Services, emphasized the need to change the narrative surrounding suicide by fostering a culture of openness, understanding, and support rather than silence and stigma. He urged everyone to engage in conversations about suicide and its prevention.

Highlighting the significance of the issue, Dr. Lalabalavu cited the World Health Organisation’s Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan (2013-2030), which identifies suicide as the second leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29 worldwide. He pointed out that each suicide has significant emotional, social, and economic repercussions, impacting families, communities, and nations globally.

In honor of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Ministry of Health will host a candlelight vigil at Ratu Sukuna Park tonight at 6 pm.
