The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection is committed to ensuring that the Natabua Safe Shelter for Women in Lautoka becomes operational by next year. This shelter, established in 2021 and provided by Soroptimist International, aims to offer a secure and supportive environment for women and children who have experienced abuse.

Minister for Women Lynda Tabuya emphasized the importance of the facility, which is designed to support at-risk individuals. The ministry has undertaken two tender processes to manage and operate the shelter thus far. The first tender in 2021 saw Medical Services Pacific selected for the role, but a conflict of interest prevented the contract’s finalization.

In 2023, Empower Pacific emerged as the sole bidder during a second tender process; however, delays within the department hindered the timely completion of this effort. To address these issues, Tabuya stated that a new re-advertisement process would be completed by the end of January 2025.

While there is no specific budget allocated for the shelter in the upcoming financial year, the ministry plans to draw funds from its Women Plan of Action allocation for the re-advertisement process. Minister Tabuya recognized Soroptimist International for its crucial support and reiterated that the administration of the shelter remains a governmental priority.

This initiative demonstrates a steadfast commitment to addressing domestic violence and providing vital services to vulnerable populations. As we anticipate the shelter’s opening, it represents hope and a crucial step towards creating safer environments for women and children in the community.
