The Ministry of Health in Fiji has reported a total of 1,276 suicide and attempted suicide cases between 2016 and 2021, averaging around 213 cases annually, with nearly half resulting in death. The year 2019 witnessed the highest count, with 244 cases, while the Western Division consistently recorded the most cases throughout these six years.

Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, emphasized the need to transform the narrative around suicide. He highlighted the importance of moving from a culture marked by silence and stigma to one that embraces openness, understanding, and support. Dr. Lalabalavu urged everyone to engage in discussions about suicide and its prevention.

He pointed out that the World Health Organization’s Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan (2013-2030) identifies suicide as the second leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29 globally. The impact of each suicide is profound, affecting the emotional, social, and economic fabric of families and communities worldwide.

Additionally, the Ministry of Health is organizing a candlelight vigil today at 6 pm at Ratu Sukuna Park to observe World Suicide Prevention Day.
