Seven years ago, Francis Lee took over as general manager of the Shangri-La Fijian Resort and Spa, returning the property to its status as one of Fiji’s premier destinations. As the longest-established tourism property in the nation, the resort faces stiff competition, but Lee remained committed to revitalizing the establishment based on the hotel owners’ request.
With nearly 40 years of experience, including roles in over 30 Shangri-La hotels worldwide, Lee was called by the owners for assistance with renovations and restructuring at the Fijian resort. When given the choice between Fiji, the Maldives, or Mauritius, he enthusiastically chose Fiji, a decision he describes as the happiest of his career. Prior to this, Lee managed the Hylandia by Shangri-La Hotel in Yunnan, China.
Having worked at Club Med properties across nine countries, including Australia, the Bahamas, and Japan, Lee was particularly drawn to Fiji. Researching the destination, he discovered that Fijians were considered among the happiest people globally, reinforcing his desire to join them. His first major initiative upon arriving was to establish a waterpark at the resort.
The waterpark, funded with an investment of approximately $150,000, has become a significant attraction, enhancing the resort’s appeal to both local and international guests. Lee noted that the owners were supportive of his idea, and he humorously recounted his conversations with them regarding its creation. Importantly, they decided to keep the waterpark free to visitors, an unusual choice compared to locations in Australia and other regions that typically charge for similar experiences.
This decision has attracted numerous families to the resort, many returning each year primarily for the waterpark, which has also garnered attention online. Lee emphasized that the goal wasn’t strictly about profit – he is equally focused on benefiting the local community by providing job opportunities. This dual focus on enjoyment for guests and support for locals has led to a thriving environment where everyone involved finds joy.
Overall, the ongoing success of the Shangri-La Fijian Resort and Spa under Francis Lee’s management shows how innovative thinking and community engagement can revive a brand and create happiness for both guests and locals alike.
