The National Disaster Management Office has opened three evacuation centers in the Central Division to accommodate residents affected by flooding in Vatuwaqa and Wailoku, Suva. According to NDMO, families have taken refuge at St. Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute, and Marata Hall in Wailoku.
The NDMO has warned residents living in flood-prone and low-lying areas to remain vigilant, as heavy rainfall overnight has resulted in rising river levels and flooding. The National Emergency Operation Centre has also been partially activated, with NDMO collaborating with relevant authorities to monitor the evolving situation.
The intense rainfall has led to significant flooding in various towns and communities, impacting minor roads and bridges. NDMO reported occurrences of landslides and traffic disruptions, urging residents in affected areas to avoid unnecessary travel.
“Public safety is of utmost importance at this time. Individuals needing help to reach higher ground can contact the Fiji Police Force or the National Fire Authority,” stated NDMO officials.
Furthermore, the office emphasizes the importance of staying away from flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and pathways where water levels are above knee height. This guideline is crucial for ensuring personal safety and reducing the risks to first responders.
Floodwaters may carry contaminants, and the public is advised to limit contact with the water. Additionally, they should be aware of potential health risks, including leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue fever, and diarrhea, which can arise following heavy rainfall.
