Weather Update!
Brought to you by your friendly weather enthusiasts at the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi, on this fine Thursday, February 20, 2025.
Attention, Northern Division and Yasawa Group – you might want to swap your sun hats for raincoats because a HEAVY RAIN ALERT is still waving its arms at you! Meanwhile, if you’re in the interior or eastern part of Viti Levu, or Kadavu and buddies, you can kick back a little as the heavy rain alarm has been canceled—talk about a turn of events!
Now, let’s not lose our heads just yet! A FLASH FLOOD ALERT is still keeping watch over some quirky little streams and low-lying areas of the interior and the eastern stretch of Viti Levu. Think Navua, Suva, and all the way to Nausori—better to stay dry than sorry!
We’ve got a persistent trough of low pressure just hanging out north of Fiji, almost like that friend who doesn’t take hints. It’s expected to mosey south soon, probably transforming your weekend plans. In the meantime, we’re stuck with a moist southeast to southwest wind flow that would make a sauna proud!
Forecast until midnight:
For our friends in the Northern Division and Yasawa:
Expect occasional showers, and maybe even some dramatic thunderstorms crashing the party with heavy downpours, specifically over Cakaudrove Province and Southern Bua. And for those in the rest of the Northern Division, your evening will be filled with rainfall and maybe a little thunderous applause.
For the Interior and eastern half of Viti Levu: Expect cloudier skies with a few stubborn showers that will likely want to visit you this afternoon, alongside some surprise thunderstorms.
Elsewhere, life will be pretty decent, apart from some afternoon/evening showers and the occasional thunderstorm – isn’t nature entertaining?
Heads up! Localized downpours could lead to some unplanned swimming in low-lying and flood-prone areas—best keep the life jackets handy!
Gusty winds are on the menu, fresh from the southeast, possibly stirring up the seas. So, if you’re thinking of going sailing, make sure you’re prepared!
Outlook for Saturday: It looks like the Northern Division, Yasawa, and Northern Lau will be in for some more wet fun with occasional rain and squally thunderstorms—happiness isn’t always sunshine, right?
Even our friends in the interior and eastern half of Viti Levu can’t escape the rain, as showers will keep poking their heads in, potentially turning into frequently heavy rain, along with squally thunderstorms.
Now let’s check in with some specific areas:
For Navua / Suva / Nausori: Hold onto your umbrellas—cloudy periods and some showers will make you wonder if you ever put them down. After all, who doesn’t enjoy a good thunderstorm?
For Nadi / Lautoka / Ba: Nice day ahead with just a sprinkle of afternoon showers; a bit like a mood ring—always changing!
For Yasawa/Mamanuca group: Occasional showers to keep you company, and maybe a thunderstorm or two wanting attention.
For Savusavu: Get ready for afternoon showers; they’re making an appearance again, complete with the classic “hey, look at me” thunderstorms.
And don’t forget about Rotuma: A STRONG WIND WARNING is still very much in place, so batten down the hatches, folks!
At the end of the day, regardless of whether you’re dodging showers or embracing the rain, just remember: rain can be an opportunity to dance with puddles! Stay safe!
