The National Disaster Management Office has activated three evacuation centers in the Central Division to shelter residents affected by flooding in Vatuwaqa and Wailoku, Suva. The affected families are currently housed in St Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute, and Marata Hall in Wailoku.
The NDMO is advising individuals living in flood-prone and low-lying areas to exercise caution due to heavy rainfall that has resulted in rising river levels and flooding. The National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has been partially activated, and NDMO is coordinating with relevant authorities to assess the ongoing situation.
The intense rainfall has caused flooding in towns and communities, impacting minor roads and bridges. Some areas are dealing with landslides and traffic disruptions, prompting NDMO to urge the public to avoid unnecessary travel in these affected regions.
Ensuring public safety is the top priority during this crisis. Those needing assistance to move to higher ground are encouraged to reach out to the Fiji Police Force and the National Fire Authority.
Furthermore, NDMO is warning people to stay away from flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways, especially where the water level exceeds knee height. This precaution is critical for personal safety and to reduce risks for both the public and first responders.
Floodwaters may carry contaminants, and the public is advised to minimize contact when possible. Additionally, people should be aware of the health risks related to leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue fever, and diarrhea following heavy rains.
