The RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens tournament is set to take place from December 12 to 14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, and it comes with exciting new by-laws aimed at enhancing the competition. Tournament director Solo Finau shared that the introduction of a bonus points system is one of the key features designed to benefit all teams participating.
The tournament will feature a four-tier competition format with the goal of attracting 80 teams. Tier One is reserved for champion teams, Tier Two for regular teams, Tier Three for senior women’s teams, and Tier Four for Under-19 competitors.
Finau emphasized the importance of innovation in reviving interest in sevens tournaments across the nation. He noted that the new competition structure helps local players understand how to perform under pressure, aligning with successful strategies seen in international competitions. “World Cups have been won by drop goals; teams should focus on maximizing their natural abilities to secure victories,” he remarked.
In addition to the bonus points, there will be instant rewards distributed after each match. Individual players who score a coast-to-coast try, beginning from their own in-goal area, will receive $100 immediately. Team captains will also receive $100 for their team’s coast-to-coast tries. Additional cash prizes will be awarded for achievements such as the most accumulated converted tries, drop goals, and penalty goals.
A special challenge will reward teams that match or beat Alosio Naduva’s record of 6.78 seconds for the fastest team try, with a $100 prize for successful attempts.
The Fiji Rugby Union has sanctioned this exciting tournament, which is set to launch on December 6.
This tournament not only promises to reinvigorate the sevens rugby scene in Fiji but also encourages local talent to shine under new competitive structures. With the emphasis on instant rewards and innovative gameplay, players have more motivation than ever to push their limits and perform at their best.
