The RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens tournament is set to take place from December 12-14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, and it comes with newly introduced by-laws aimed at enhancing the competitive spirit of the event. Tournament director Solo Finau shared with SUNsports that a bonus points system has been implemented, which is expected to be beneficial for all teams participating in the tournament.
The tournament will feature four tiers, targeting a total of 80 teams. Tier One will host champion teams, while Tier Two is designated for regular teams. Tier Three will focus on senior women’s teams, and Tier Four will cater to Under-19 participants.
Finau emphasized the importance of innovation in promoting sevens tournaments across the country. “We are looking to create an environment where local players can thrive in challenging situations,” he noted. He pointed out that successful teams at the World Cup level have won matches through drop goals, a strategy he believes can also be effectively utilized locally.
The tournament will also offer instant rewards immediately following matches. For instance, a player who scores a coast-to-coast individual try from within their own “In-Goal space” will receive a $100 prize. The team captain of a coast-to-coast team try will also take home $100 on behalf of their team. Additional cash prizes will be awarded for the most accumulated converted tries and drop goals, as well as penalty goals scored by a team.
Excitingly, teams will also compete for a cash reward if they can match or break Alosio Naduva’s record of 6.78 seconds for the fastest team try, or achieve it within 7 seconds from the new kick-off. This tournament, which is sanctioned by the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), will officially launch on December 6.
In summary, this tournament not only aims to reinvigorate interest in sevens rugby but also to provide unique opportunities for financial rewards and player development. With these innovations, participants can look forward to a competitive yet rewarding experience that may pave the way for future talents in the sport.
