The RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens has unveiled new by-laws aimed at enhancing the excitement of its tournament scheduled for December 12-14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. Tournament director Solo Finau shared with SUNsports that the introduction of a bonus points system is designed to benefit all participating teams.

Organizers aim to attract 80 teams across four competitive tiers. Tier One will feature champion teams, Tier Two will host regular teams, Tier Three is designated for senior women’s teams, and Tier Four will cater to Under-19 competitors.

Finau emphasized that these innovative adjustments are intended to rekindle interest in sevens tournaments throughout the nation. He explained that the new format allows local players to better understand their capabilities in high-pressure situations. “The World Cups have been won by drop goals; why can’t we implement this strategy? Teams should strive not only to compete but also to win using their natural strengths,” Finau remarked.

A notable aspect of the tournament is the introduction of instant rewards. Players scoring a “coast to coast” individual try from within their own in-goal space will receive a $100 reward immediately following the match. The team captain will also earn $100 for a “coast to coast” team try. Additional cash prizes will be awarded for the most accumulated converted tries, drop goals, and penalty goals, each receiving $100 after the tournament.

For those teams that manage to equal or beat Alosio Naduva’s remarkable record of 6.78 seconds for the fastest team try, or complete it within 7 or 14 seconds without stoppages from kick-off, there’s a $100 incentive on offer as well.

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has sanctioned the tournament, which will officially launch on December 6.

This tournament not only promises to revitalize local rugby by engaging players and teams in fresh and rewarding competition but also fosters a spirit of innovation and excitement as participants embrace new strategies and incentives. As the rugby community eagerly anticipates this event, it could serve as a platform to showcase and further nurture the immense talent present in Fiji’s rugby scene.
