The RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens is set to enhance this year’s tournament with innovative new by-laws, aiming to reinvigorate interest in the sport. Scheduled for December 12-14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, the tournament director, Solo Finau, announced these changes, which include a bonus points system designed to benefit all participating teams.

The organizers are targeting a participation of 80 teams across a four-tier competition structure. Tier One will feature top champion teams, Tier Two will accommodate regular teams, Tier Three is designated for senior women’s squads, while the Under-19 teams will compete in Tier Four.

Finau emphasizes the need for innovation in sevens tournaments, indicating that the new structure aims not only to enhance the competitive spirit but also to provide financial benefits, ultimately fostering player development. He said, “We are changing the competition format to prepare local players for high-pressure scenarios,” referencing the success of teams winning World Cups with strategic drop goals.

To further engage participants, the tournament will offer instant rewards. For example, an individual player who makes a coast-to-coast try starting from their own in-goal area will receive a $100 bonus immediately after the match. The respective team captain will also receive $100 for a coast-to-coast team try. Other cash prizes include awards for the most converted tries, drop goals, and penalty goals throughout the tournament. Additionally, any team that matches or exceeds Alosio Naduva’s record for the fastest team try will earn $100.

The Fiji Rugby Union has sanctioned this tournament, which will be officially launched on December 6.

This tournament not only promises thrilling competition but also encourages players to showcase their skills in unique ways, ultimately paving the path for a more dynamic and financially viable rugby scene in Fiji. The introduction of these incentives is a strategic move to enhance participation and performance, setting the stage for an exciting event sure to capture the attention of rugby enthusiasts.
