The RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens is set to bring a fresh approach to its tournament, scheduled for December 12-14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. Tournament director Solo Finau shared that new by-laws have been introduced, including a bonus points system designed to enhance the competitive experience for all teams.

With a goal of attracting 80 teams, the tournament will feature a four-tier format. Tier One is reserved for champion teams, while Tier Two is for regular teams. Senior women’s teams will compete in Tier Three, and Tier Four will host Under-19 teams. Finau emphasized that these changes aim to rekindle interest in rugby sevens across the nation.

To encourage players to thrive in challenging scenarios, the format encourages innovative play, including tactics often seen during global competitions, such as drop goals. “We want our local players to understand the importance of adaptability during tight matches,” Finau remarked.

In an exciting turn, participants can earn immediate financial rewards. An individual player who makes a coast-to-coast try from their own in-goal area will receive $100 instantly. Additionally, team captains can also earn $100 for their teams upon completing a coast-to-coast try. Other rewards will recognize the top performing teams in various categories, including the most converted tries and drop goals.

Further incentivizing speed and agility, teams that match or exceed Alosio Naduva’s record of 6.78 seconds for a team try will be rewarded with $100.

The Fiji Rugby Union has sanctioned this engaging tournament, which will officially kick off with its launch event on December 6.

This innovative approach not only offers competing teams a chance to showcase their talents but also aims to foster growth in local rugby talent by encouraging unique gameplay tactics. The financial incentives serve as motivation, reflecting a broader commitment to both the sport and the players.

Overall, the strategies being implemented suggest a bright future for rugby sevens in Fiji, as the tournament may galvanize interest and inspire further participation at all levels of the sport.
