The RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens tournament is set to take place from December 12-14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, unveiling new by-laws to enhance the competitive spirit of the event. Tournament director Solo Finau shared with SUNsports that a bonus points system has been introduced, which aims to benefit all participating teams.
The tournament anticipates the participation of 80 teams across four competition tiers: Tier One for champion teams, Tier Two for regular teams, Tier Three for senior women’s teams, and Tier Four for the Under-19 category. Finau emphasized the aim of this revamped format is to generate excitement and re-engage interest in sevens tournaments nationwide. He expressed that these innovations not only help teams financially but also focus on player development.
“We are reshaping the competition format to prepare our local players for tight situations,” Finau remarked. He also noted the importance of using strategies that have proven effective in high-stakes situations, citing that World Cups have been won by drop goals and encouraging teams to embrace this aspect of the game.
In addition to the bonus points, the tournament will feature attractive instant rewards for outstanding performances. These include $100 for a player achieving a coast-to-coast individual try starting from their own in-goal space and another $100 for the team captain if their team achieves a coast-to-coast team try. Teams can also earn cash rewards for the most converted tries, drop goals, and penalty goals throughout the tournament, with each winner receiving $100.
Furthermore, a special $100 reward will be offered to the team that matches or exceeds Alosio Naduva’s record for the fastest team try, which is currently set at 6.78 seconds, or completes the try within 7 seconds.
The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has sanctioned the tournament, and a launch event is scheduled for December 6.
This tournament not only provides an opportunity for local talents to showcase their skills but also presents a refreshing take on sevens rugby in Fiji. The introduction of innovative rules and monetary incentives underlines a commitment to elevating the sport, making it an exciting time for teams and fans alike.
