Serving Hope: How Volleyball is Changing Lives in Fiji

The Hanua Two team participated in the 2024-2025 Suva Volleyball Pre-Knockout Tournament with the goal of engaging young people in volleyball and steering them away from criminal activities. In their recent match at the National Netball Centre in Suva, the team triumphed over Tamavua Bulls Two, winning by two sets.

Comprising Rotuman youths from the Raiwai community, the team is led by standout player Shane Kitione, who founded the team and serves as its captain. Kitione emphasized the importance of encouraging young players to venture beyond their familiar environments and participate in larger competitions for greater recognition.

“We need to encourage them to try things they haven’t experienced before, as they have mostly played in the suburbs and have not been exposed to bigger tournaments,” he remarked. Kitione believes that engaging in sports provides a constructive alternative, helping players avoid illicit substances and alcohol.

“While all teams aim to win, our ultimate goal is to lead our youth away from drugs and alcohol,” he stressed. In his closing remarks, the captain urged supporters to enhance their spiritual understanding by embracing faith, stating, “Knowing the Lord Jesus is better than anything else to know in the world.”

The tournament will continue next weekend.
