Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has shown support for the Prime Minister’s proposal to form a board of inquiry regarding the ongoing issues related to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
Mr. Seruiratu believes that establishing such an inquiry is essential for preserving the Government’s integrity and addressing the concerns surrounding the matter’s management. Speaking to the media, he stated that creating a board of inquiry is the appropriate course of action.
“That’s the right thing to do,” he emphasized, referencing his previous insistence on the matter during the Lynda Tabuya case, where he communicated directly with the Prime Minister’s Office. He noted that while independent entities are responsible for appointments, the Prime Minister, as the head of Government, ultimately carries the responsibility for the issues that arise within the administration, including those linked to FICAC and Barbara Malimali.
Mr. Seruiratu highlighted that establishing an inquiry would positively impact both the integrity of the Prime Minister’s Office and the individuals involved in the case. He reiterated the importance of including women in leadership roles, underscoring the effort to eliminate discrimination against women while acknowledging that there are established processes to follow.
When asked if an inquiry might compromise the integrity of the Judicial Services Commission, Mr. Seruiratu recognized the challenges these agencies encounter. He stressed the importance of following established systems and principles of good governance to maintain public trust in these organizations.
“If this is a recurring issue, it raises questions about those responsible. I hope the Prime Minister will fulfill his promise and establish an inquiry into these matters.”
