Seruiratu Demands Justice: What Lies Behind FICAC Deputy’s Resignation?

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has stated that they will persist in demanding justice for Francis Puleiwai, the acting Deputy Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), who resigned from her position yesterday. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her resignation.

Seruiratu raised three critical questions regarding the situation. First, he pointed out that Puleiwai indicated she had received advice that led her to delay laying charges, prompting him to seek clarity on who issued those instructions.

Secondly, he questioned why the Attorney-General did not mention that Barbara Malimali is currently under a contract with the Constitutional Offices Commission, signed by the President, making her the chairman of the Electoral Commission. He highlighted that Malimali remains under an active contract and asked for an explanation of her continued consideration for the position despite not resigning.

Finally, Seruiratu inquired why the matter was still being pursued when there is evident information that requires a detailed investigation.

He underscored the importance of addressing these issues seriously due to the role the institution plays in upholding democratic governance and the rule of law, asserting that investor confidence hinges on the integrity of the governance system. He warned that without faith in law and order, the nation risks losing essential investors crucial for employment and economic stability.
