Seruiratu Demands Justice: A Call for Investigation into FICAC Deputy’s Resignation

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu emphasized their commitment to ensuring justice for Francis Puleiwai, the acting Deputy Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), who resigned yesterday. He called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her resignation.

Mr. Seruiratu raised three critical questions regarding the situation. Firstly, he inquired about the instructions given to Ms. Puleiwai, who mentioned that she had provided advice but was told to delay laying charges. He sought to identify who issued those directives.

Secondly, he questioned the Attorney-General’s failure to acknowledge that Barbara Malimali is currently under a Constitutional Offices Commission contract, signed by the President, serving as the chairman of the Electoral Commission. He asked for clarification on why she was still being considered for that position without having resigned.

Lastly, Mr. Seruiratu expressed concern over why the investigation is ongoing despite clear evidence indicating the need for a comprehensive inquiry into the matter.

He stressed that this issue should not be taken lightly, highlighting the importance of the institution’s role in upholding democratic governance and the rule of law. He also pointed out that maintaining investor confidence is crucial for employment and economic stability, as a lack of faith in the governance system could drive investors away.
