Fijian rugby legend Waisale Serevi has taken significant steps to empower the youth of Fiji through his Aqua Pacific Serevi Academy of Rugby. During a recent rugby camp at Lawaqa Park, Serevi emphasized the transformative power of rugby to inspire young people, encouraging them to set meaningful goals and steer clear of drugs.
Serevi stated, “For me, rugby is more than a sport; it’s a vehicle for change.” With the challenges that today’s youth face, including substance abuse, he aimed to offer guidance that could lead them towards a positive direction. Using his own journey as an inspiration, Serevi recounted how he dreamed of playing rugby at nine years old after witnessing Fiji’s victory over the British Lions in 1977. This pivotal moment ignited his aspirations, culminating in a successful career representing Fiji in international rugby.
He believes in the significance of achieving small, daily goals, which he encourages as a foundation for discipline and perseverance. “Wake up early, clean your bed, go to school on time, and train hard. These small goals build discipline and patience,” he remarked, crediting these habits for his longevity in the sport, which included seven World Cups.
While rugby skills are central to the academy’s mission, Serevi prioritizes the development of character, stating, “My philosophy is to create the best rugby players in the world, but more importantly, good people.” This philosophy reinforces that character transcends medals and accolades.
The academy’s theme, “Stay Strong, Say No to Drugs,” underscores Serevi’s belief in making positive life choices. He highlights that true strength comes from resisting negative influences.
Reflecting on his faith, Serevi shared how scriptures from Philippians have been his source of strength, aiming to instill that same belief in the children he coaches. The camp not only provides training for rugby but also offers lessons in resilience and the importance of personal integrity.
As Serevi and his academy forge ahead, their efforts shine a hopeful light for Fiji’s youth, offering them pathways to growth, discipline, and positive life choices through sport. This initiative not only promotes athleticism but is a crucial step toward building a stronger, healthier future for young people in Fiji.
