Waisale Serevi, renowned as the King of Sevens, is set to join Sireli Bobo’s coaching staff for the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) Under-20 rugby team as they prepare for a tour to New Zealand later this month. The exciting announcement was made as the team commenced their training camp, highlighting Serevi’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of rugby talent in Fiji.
Serevi’s involvement follows a meeting with FSC’s acting Chief Executive Officer, Gilbert Vakalalabure, where he expressed his eagerness to share his invaluable knowledge and experience with the under-20 sevens squad. Scheduled to join the coaching team next Monday, Serevi’s presence is expected to significantly enrich the training process, bringing with him a wealth of wisdom and passion for the sport.
The FSC emphasized that with Serevi on board, the outlook for Fijian rugby is even more promising, stating, “The future of Fijian rugby just got even brighter.” The squad was selected through a competitive series of events held in various locations, including Navua, Sigatoka, Savusavu, Rakiraki, and at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on November 30.
Bobo previously remarked that the team’s primary focus is to develop players from the grassroots level and better prepare them for high-level competitions. The Under-20 side is set to depart for New Zealand on January 29, with hopes of gaining valuable experience and enhancing their skills on the international stage.
This collaborative effort between seasoned players and emerging talents not only underscores the dedication to advancing the sport in Fiji but also inspires a new generation of athletes to aim for greatness, making it an encouraging time for rugby in the region.
