Fiji’s Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has issued a crucial warning to seasonal workers regarding the severe consequences that criminal convictions can have on their overseas employment contracts. This caution follows an incident involving three seasonal workers from Tavea Island, Bua, who were charged with being drunk and disorderly on an inter-island vessel during Christmas Day. Witnesses reported feeling threatened by the workers’ disruptive behavior, illustrating the potential dangers such misconduct poses.
Mr. Singh emphasized that under the current work policies of New Zealand and Australia, any conviction—no matter how minor—will lead to the automatic termination of existing overseas contracts and disqualify individuals from any future job applications in these countries. He noted that even if these workers attempt to reapply, they will not be allowed to work abroad. “If someone had a past minor traffic offense or drunk and disorderly behavior, it prohibits them,” Singh stated, stressing the importance of maintaining a clean legal record.
In light of these developments, the Minister is collaborating with the Ministry of Justice and the High Commissioners from both nations to address the implications of such offenses, reaffirming the commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Fijian workers abroad.
This incident serves as a poignant reminder for seasonal workers about the responsibilities tied to their behavior overseas. By fostering a culture of accountability and compliance with legal standards, workers can not only secure their current positions but also enhance their future employment prospects. The hope is that by adhering to these guidelines and maintaining transparency regarding past convictions, seasonal workers can create a safer and more supportive environment for themselves, leading to improved conditions and job security in international markets.
In summary, Minister Singh’s warning underscores the importance of lawful conduct and honesty, paving the way for a successful international employment journey for seasonal workers. By staying informed and compliant with legal expectations, Fijian workers can aspire for better opportunities in the future.
