Seasonal Ban Lifted: What’s Next for Grouper and Coral Trout?

The Ministry of Fisheries and Forests has officially lifted the seasonal ban on Grouper and Coral Trout, known locally as Kawakawa and Donu, which lasted until September 30.

These fish species play a crucial role in coastal marine ecosystems and are significant for both food and income. The seasonal ban was implemented to safeguard these species during their spawning period and to avert the risk of overfishing, which could lead to a decline in their populations and the potential collapse of the fishery.

Minister Alitia Bainivalu expressed gratitude to the Fijian community for their dedication and support during the ban, which was in effect from June 1 to September 30.

Bainivalu encouraged the public to continue collaborating to sustain and manage the country’s fisheries and ocean resources. “With the ban now lifted, I urge everyone to practice responsible and sustainable fishing,” she stated.
